OpenAI Targets $30 Billion Cash Injection at $1.25 Trillion Valuation

The ChatGPT creator is pursuing a massive private round to secure resources before its planned public debut, setting a new benchmark for private enterprise.

OpenAI is navigating a critical financial crossroads, opting to pursue a massive private funding round instead of immediately proceeding with its initial public offering. The company is reportedly in the final stages of negotiations to secure up to $30 billion in new capital. This move signals a strategic decision to bolster its balance sheet privately before testing the public markets.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the deal would value OpenAI at $1.25 trillion on a pre-money basis. The round is being led by the investment firm Coatue and includes participation from investors in the United Arab Emirates. This valuation represents a significant increase from the previous figure of $852 billion post-money, which was established during the company’s last funding round in March.

The structure of this new investment may include more than just cash. Reports indicate that the funding from UAE partners could be tied to a separate agreement to secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI. This potential partnership aims to address the infrastructure demands required to support the company's growing AI models.

Terms for the deal are still being negotiated, so the final figures may shift. A month ago, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI was seeking $30 billion at a higher valuation of $1.4 trillion. OpenAI has declined to comment on the latest reports, leaving the exact terms of the agreement unconfirmed until an official announcement.

If the $1.25 trillion valuation holds, OpenAI would break the record for the most valuable private company in history. This milestone would also raise the expectations for its forthcoming IPO. The company filed confidential paperwork for a public listing in June, setting the stage for a major entrance into the stock market. A higher private valuation typically forces a higher entry price for public shares, which could complicate the IPO process.

The high bar set by OpenAI also creates ripple effects for its primary rival, Anthropic. Many observers believe Anthropic is closer to launching its own IPO, with rumors suggesting its public S-1 filing could be released at any time. CNBC reports that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its public debut. This follows a $65 billion raise in May that valued the company at $965 billion, a move many considered its final private round before going public. Anthropic also filed confidential IPO paperwork in June, mirroring OpenAI's timeline.
