Working families and industry observers are watching closely as Chinese automaker BYD prepares to launch its most ambitious model to date. The company is set to introduce a new ultra-luxury electric sedan that will debut outside its home market for the first time. This move represents a significant shift in strategy for a brand historically recognized for its affordability. The new vehicle is designed to compete directly with established luxury houses, marking a clear departure from BYD’s traditional market positioning.
The decision to launch the car in the United Arab Emirates rather than in China was confirmed by Yangwang general manager Hu Xiaoqing. This choice suggests the manufacturer is targeting a specific international demographic for this flagship model. While the exact date of the public reveal has not been fixed, the sedan is expected to make its official debut later this month. The location choice highlights BYD’s growing confidence in its ability to appeal to high-net-worth consumers in the Middle East.
The new model is positioned as the largest and most luxurious electric sedan in BYD’s lineup. Its physical dimensions and design language are comparable to the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Industry reports indicate the vehicle is approximately 5,500 millimeters long, which places it squarely in the category of executive limousines. This size is a notable contrast to BYD’s entry-level offerings, such as the Seagull hatchback, which sells for under $10,000 in China.
BYD has significantly expanded its product range in recent years. The company now operates a complex structure that includes three distinct sub-brands: Denza, FangChengBao, and Yangwang. Yangwang sits at the top of this hierarchy and serves as a testing ground for the company’s latest technological advancements. Previous models in this tier utilized a quad-motor platform capable of producing 1,300 horsepower, along with an intelligent body control system that allowed the vehicle to perform dynamic maneuvers such as jumping and driving on three wheels.
Images of the new executive sedan were released last month, showing the vehicle undergoing testing. Although the prototype was covered in camouflage, its silhouette clearly resembled high-end competitors like the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. Zheng Yu, the executive general manager of Yangwang, stated that the car will feature unprecedented disruptive technology, though he did not provide specific technical details. The reveal of these images has fueled speculation about the vehicle's capabilities and design philosophy.
Certain technical specifications have been inferred from recent displays and statements by company leadership. The sedan was photographed at a BYD flash charging station, which suggests the vehicle will support megawatt-level charging speeds. It also features rear-hinged coach doors, a design element not previously seen on BYD models. Additionally, the car is reportedly the first to utilize the company's new solid-state battery technology. Stella Li, an executive vice president, previously indicated that the first vehicle with this battery type was scheduled to debut in 2027.
The anticipated starting price for the new sedan is estimated at 2 million yuan, or roughly $300,000. This price point places the vehicle well above BYD’s current luxury offerings. For context, the U7 electric sedan starts at $98,000, while the brand’s most expensive mass-produced vehicle, the U8L plug-in hybrid SUV, starts at $217,000. The new flagship aims to establish BYD as a serious contender in the ultra-luxury segment, challenging long-standing rivals in the global market.
